How to apply

Get your NIF

Obtain a Portuguese tax identification number. This can be done remotely through a fiscal representative or in-person at a local Finanças office.

Gather documents

Collect all required documents. Criminal records and certain certificates may need to be apostilled or legalized, depending on your country.

Consulate appointment

Schedule and attend an appointment at your nearest Portuguese consulate. Submit your application and documents in person. Fee: ~€90.

Receive entry visa

Processing typically takes 30–60 days. Once approved, you’ll receive a temporary visa sticker in your passport to enter Portugal.

AIMA residence permit

After arriving in Portugal, schedule an appointment with AIMA (formerly SEF) to obtain your residence permit card. Fee: ~€83.
